About Career 

As an Elderly Caregiver, you will be responsible for assisting and helping elderly people at home or elderly care centers (old age homes) who are suffering from a chronic disease or ailment, etc. who have some type of disability condition, or who are bed-ridden. You may also be assisting and helping people who are not suffering from any disease or disability or are not bedridden.

You will be responsible for assisting and helping elderly people in managing their day-to-day activities such as eating, dressing, toileting, grooming, exercising, etc. You may also be interacting with the family members as well as doctors informing them about any changes in their behavior or other aspects related to health & well-being.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As an Elderly Caregiver, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:

1. You will be required to provide help to elders such as helping them in moving in and out of beds, baths, wheelchairs, or automobiles and with dressing and grooming.

2. You will be assisting elders with walking, exercising, etc. if required.

3. You will be required to keep older mentally healthy by entertaining them or conversing with them.

4. You will be required to plan, purchase, prepare, or serve meals to elders, as per the prescribed diet chart or doctors.

5. You will be required to check, monitor, and record the pulse, temperature, and respiration of elders if they are not doing well.

6. You will be taking or accompanying the elders on trips outside the home, assisting, and companionship.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per the scheme of studies - Obtain NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Home Health Aide.

After completing Class 10, you can obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 Qualification in Home Health Aide from any vocational institute or other similar. For this certificate; you need to be 18 years of age.

After completing Class 8 in school, you can obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 4 Qualification in Home Health Aide from any vocational institute or other similar. For this certificate, you need to be 18 years of age.

After completing Class 5 in school, you can obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 3 Qualification in Elderly Caretaker (Non-Clinical) from any vocational institute or other similar. For this certificate, you need to be 18 years of age.

After completing class 12, you may apply for any Bachelor’s degree such as B.Com, or B.Sc. B.A., etc., or in any other similar field. Then can apply for job opportunities if you feel you have proven the required skills and are capable of taking care of elders.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

1. After completing class 5 in school, you can obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 3 Qualification in Elderly Caretaker (Non-Clinical).

2. On the other hand, if you have completed, class 8 in school then you may obtain NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Home Health Aide. Also, if you have completed class 10 then you may obtain this NSQF Level 4 Qualification in Home Health Aide.

3. If you have obtained a bachelor’s degree then also you may apply for various job opportunities available for taking care of elders.

4. However, you may also get job opportunities if you have proven the required skills and are capable of taking care of elders. So, structured and formal education is not a pre-requisite for this career

Career Growth

From entry-level jobs such as shift workers or helpers in a small-size elder care home or at the client’s home, you will grow up and may find job opportunities with various large-size elder care homes. You may grow and become a shift supervisor or a shift manager and may also find job opportunities as an Eldercare Manager or ElderCare Support Executive after gaining certain years of experience.

Salary Offered  

1. At the beginning, you may not get a monthly salary in many cases and instead you will be paid daily. You will have to do 8-10 hours shifts daily.

2. You will be earning around Rs. 250-280/day of 8-10 hours shift per day at the beginning of your career.

3. After having a good experience for 5-10 years, if you are enrolled with a good elder care agency, you may get about Rs. 300-400/day for 8-10 hours shift.

4. In some cases, with agencies that provide a caregiver for upper-middle-class and richer people, you may expect to get about Rs. 500-750/day of 8-10 hours shift. These are not very easily available. You have to be very well-groomed and educated to work in the homes of upper-middle-class and rich people.

Future Prospects 

1. With increasing household incomes of the Indian middle class and upper-middle-class, people do not have time for their elders to take care of and so people are hiring Elderly Caregivers who can take care of their loved ones. This is an urban trend and it is also catching up in smaller cities and towns.

2. It is also expected that by 2050, the total number of people who obtain eldercare services either at old age homes or at home will double from 14 million (in 2000) to 28 million (by 2050). All of this indicates a favorable job outlook and prospects for elderly caregiver candidates.
