Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a YouTuber, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities:-

1. Identifying self qualities, new innovative video content and continuously preparing to present them to a global audience as anyone anywhere can access your content.

2. Continuously doing research, online or offline, and find novel ways to incorporate the gained knowledge into your videos.

3. Making the maximum out of the first 5 seconds of your videos as that part is the most watched, putting in the logo, descriptions and short trailer there including some valuable information about the following video in those 5 seconds.

4. Putting some essential keywords in the title as you need to remember that you cannot just put up anything as you will be a social influencer intending to make a profession out of this.

5. Setting up some goals, estimating results, analyzing and optimizing your efforts.

6. Following trends and monitoring competitors’ activities to find interesting / popular topics which will be effective for your YouTube channel.

7. Taking care of the technical aspects like using good video editing tools (many are available on mobile phones too) to edit and finalize your videos before releasing them to your audience, planning your shoots in adequately lit areas with decent cameras and microphones (using mobile phones is a good option in the beginning but has to be upgraded eventually). Remember, even the best ideas can fail to attract a massive audience due to poor technical quality of videos.

8. Suggesting your viewers to subscribe. This is always important and not a crime but you should not sound like you are requesting.

9. Maintaining links on your videos to any of your Facebook or other social media profiles so some interested viewers can follow your activities outside of YouTube. This is important for expanding your fan community.

10. Accessing other monetizing mechanisms offered by YouTube other than just earning through advertisements that are shown before or during your videos.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies – B. Voc / Bachelor degree in any discipline (optional).

After completing Class 10 then Class 11-12 you can finish your B. Voc (Bachelor of Vocation) / Bachelor degree in any discipline (optional). No particular qualification is a prerequisite for this career so you may as well start vlogging at the age of 10 or earlier.

Required Qualification & Competencies 

Structured training, formal certification or any sort of licensing are not pre-requisites for becoming a YouTuber. However, it is advisable to complete at least secondary level of education (Class 10) or equivalent before you start earning as a Youtuber.

1. You should have interests for Enterprising Occupations. Enterprising occupations involve taking initiatives, initiating actions, and planning to achieve goals, often business goals. These involve gathering resources and leading people to get things done. These require decision making, risk taking and action orientation.

2. You should have interests for Social Occupations. Social occupations involve helping or assisting others; these involve working with and communicating with people to provide various services; these may involve educating and advising others.

3. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment. 

4. You should have knowledge of Communications and Media - how different media such as print, television, radio and social media works; how to produce content such as news, articles, audio-visual programs, etc. for different media. This includes various ways to inform and entertain people via print, audio, audio-visual and online media.

You should have knowledge of Sales and Promotion - the various principles, theories, methods, systems and processes to communicate and promote the benefits of various products or services of an organisation to a targeted group of customers, influencing their buying decisions and convincing them to buy the products or services.

6. You should have knowledge of Customer Service - how to provide customer services. This includes understanding customer needs, helping customers to use products and services, answering customer queries, handling customer complaints and grievances, and evaluating customer satisfaction.

7. You should have knowledge of Computers - computer software and applications, to be used for regular data entry / retrieval and updating virtual databases.

8. You should have Public Speaking Skills - Talking effectively to a large group of people or an audience or addressing public at large in different settings such as conferences, seminars, meetings, etc.

2. You may feature in various magazines and travel to various locations for being interviewed if you can gain that much popularity. If you are into performing arts like music or comedy, you may even conduct multi-city tours, perform live and do houseful shows across the country or abroad.

1. Earnings are generally calculated in terms of the metric ‘cost per thousand impressions (CPM)’ which is simply the amount that an advertiser pays to a publisher (here it is YouTube) for every thousand visits to a page or the amount an advertiser pays to YouTube for every thousand clicks on a video. 1 click means 1 viewer watches an advertisement once.

2. CPM may vary between 70p to Rs. 698.42 depending on quality of online traffic (traffic means number of visits), the source country (advertisements are meant to be country specific and in local languages), the prices of specific ads and the actual click rate, among other factors.

3. So if you have only 1000 views per day for a video, you may expect to earn around Rs. 500 – Rs. 9000 or slightly more a month.

4. Generally famous YouTubers get around 600,000 to 1,000,000 views in a day that generates around Rs. 5, 00, 000 to Rs. 10, 00,00,000 or more in a month! You can get famous in a year or 2 if your content gets popular. Bhuvan Bam, one of the highest paid YouTubers, shot to fame in 2 years only and now earns Rs. 1, 50, 000 – Rs. 3, 00,000 a month! Following are indicative earnings figures.

5. At the entry level when you are just trying to set up your YouTube channel and build a fanbase, your earnings may vary between Rs. 500 to Rs. 3, 000 or modestly more per month depending on a variety of factors.

6. After 1-6 years, you may expect around Rs. 2,000 – Rs. 1, 00, 000 per month or more.

7. After 6-12 years, if you have an established subscriber community you may make about Rs. 7,000 – Rs. 2, 00,000 or more per month.

8. In 12+ years if you can maintain your viewer base, you may expect to make about Rs. 10, 000 – Rs. 10, 00,000 or more per month.

Future Prospects 

1. The future for this pathway looks very bright as it is no secret that YouTube is extremely popular and the company itself admits that Indian video viewers are much more engaged than the rest of the world. YouTube has completed 10 years in India and has penetrated 80% of the internet multiverse of the country. YouTube is witnessing breakneck growth in India recently with 60% of its 245 million monthly users coming from the non-metros with the introduction of speedy 4G networks in the country. Over 6 billion hours of digital video content is watched every month and 70% of it consumed through mobile phones.

2. There are more than 300 million smartphone users in India today. The volume of video content that YouTube hosts currently can run for 46000 years even if no more content is added, provided the annual use of YouTube remains constant. Today the number of YouTube channels that have more than 1 million users is 1500 out of which 300 are from India. The highest paid YouTuber of 2018, Ryan (whose last name is not made public), is merely 7 years old and reviews new toys for his viewers! His earnings totaled to a whopping 22 million US Dollars in 2018. 50% of YouTube viewers are predicted to refrain from subscribing to paid TV networks by 2025.The company claims to see 100% growth in daily activity in India as YouTube has almost become a habit here.

3. Viewers spend over 90% of their viewership time watching regional content. The content creator ecosystem is expanding widely in India with more and more viewership coming in from Tier 2 cities. The major categories enjoying most traction are movies, music, news, comedy, song covers and food. Music and comedy content creators are also conducting city tours and real-time shows across the country after building a fan base through YouTube. This is the basis of YouTube’s online-to-offline business model. YouTube is at the core of what these artists do and serves as a springboard for them to jump to greater heights.
