About Career 

1. As a Domestic Appliance Repair Technician, you will be repairing all sorts of domestic / home appliances, electrical/electronic equipment and devices like televisions, set-top boxes, dish antenna, broadband receivers and routers, music systems, home theatre systems, refrigerators, washing machines, microwave ovens, over-toaster-grillers, mixers- grinders, kitchen chimneys, and all sorts of electronic and electrical equipment.

2. You may work at an appliance servicing center or visit customers’ homes to carry out your repair and maintenance work. You need to dismantle parts of the appliances, identify the defects or defective parts, repair it or replace the defective parts and then test it to check whether the appliances are working properly or not.

3. Once the repair work is completed, you will fill up service delivery forms with the details of what the problem/s was and what repair work was done. You will get the customers to sign this form and then submit the forms to your office. You may also have to enter the service details to computers.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

As a Domestic Appliance Repair Technician, you will be engaged with one or more of the following roles and responsibilities: -

1. Operating, inspecting, or testing equipment or machinery to find machine malfunctions, short circuits or loose connections and remove defective parts.

2. Performing routine maintenance checks, such as inspecting motors, circuits, belts, fluid levels, replacing filters etc.

3. Diagnosing electrical, electronics, and mechanical problems and determining how to fix them.

4. Repairing machines or equipment using tools like electrical or electronic testing devices, electrical power tools, etc.

5. Cleaning or lubricating shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery.

6. Installing or suggesting extra equipment to improve the energy efficiency of domestic devices.

7. Estimating costs to repair machinery, appliances or regular devices.

Career Entry Pathway 

Class 8 in school – NSQF Training and Certificate for ‘Electrician Domestic’ or ‘Repair & Maintenance of Domestic Electronic Appliances’ or similar courses.

After completing Class 8 in school, you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 2 Training and Certificate for ‘Electrician Domestic’ or Level 3 Training and Certificate for ‘Repair & Maintenance of Domestic Electronic Appliances’ or similar courses. The total training hours are 700, 3865 and 520 respectively.

After Class 10, you can go for training at an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for the trade of ‘Mechanic – Consumer Electronics / Electrical Appliances’, ‘Mechanic – General Electronics’, ‘Mechanic (Electrical Domestic Appliances)’ or related trades.

After Class 10, you can go for training at an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for the trade of ‘Mechanic - Radio / Television’ or ‘Mechanic – Watch / Clock’ or related trades.

After Class 10, you can go for training at an Industrial Training Institute (ITI), National Skill Training Institute (NSTI), Regional Vocational Training Institute (RVTI), National Vocational Training Institute (NVTI), Industrial Training Center (ITC) or other vocational institutes for the trade of ‘Instrument Mechanic’ or ‘Mechanic – Refrigeration and Air Conditioning’ or related trades. Both the courses are of 2 years with 4 semesters, 6 months each.

After Class 10, you can go for National Skill Qualifications Framework (NSQF) Level 5 Training and Certificate for ‘Mechanic Radio, Audio, Video System and Appliances’ or similar courses. The total number of training hours is 3120. The course is of 2 years with both Basic and On-Job-Training (OJT).

Required Qualification & Competencies 

After Class 8:

1. You can go forNSQF Training and Certificate for related trades.

2. You can complete Class 10 with or without Science and Mathematics, then go for NSQF / ITI Training courses.

1. You should have interests for Realistic Occupations. Realistic occupations involve more practical and hands-on activities than paperwork or office work. Realistic occupations often involve physical activities for getting things done using various tools and equipment. 

2. You should have interests for Conventional Occupations. Conventional occupations involve repetitive and routine tasks as well as fixed processes or procedures for getting things done. These occupations involve working more with data, systems, and procedures and less with ideas or creativity.

3. You should have Machine Repair and Maintenance Skills - performing repair and maintenance of different machines, equipment, and devices.

4. You should have Active Listening Skills- giving full attention to what other people are saying, understanding the points being made by others, asking questions, etc.

Career - Job Opportunities & Profiles 

You may get a job with a service partner of a domestic appliances company (like LG, Sony, Philips, Whirlpool, Voltas etc) or small-scale appliance repair shops. Companies outsource their services from small to medium scale service firms.

Career Growth

With experience, you can get promotions to various senior level roles progressively. From being a technician, you can become a Senior Technician, Services Specialist etc. However, for getting promoted to higher level jobs, you will need further educational qualifications such as higher / senior secondary degree, graduation etc. apart from training in different types of domestic appliances and related technologies.

Salary Offered  

1. In the entry level, you may earn about Rs 4,000 – Rs 9,000 or more per month as salary.

2. With 1-5 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 6,000-10,000 or more a month.

3. With 6-10 years of experience, you may earn about Rs. 10,000 – 20,000 or more per month.

4. Senior technicians may earn anywhere between Rs. 15,000 – 35,000 per month or even more in salaries and commissions.

The future of Domestic Appliance Repair Technicians looks good as the Indian Consumer Market is doing exceptionally well since the disposable income of the middle class is increasing. The demand in the Indian Consumer Durables Sector is growing. The Indian Appliance and Consumer Electronics Industry has shown tremendous growth to more than 2 trillion Indian Rupees (more than 30 billion US Dollars). It is expected to reach more than 3 trillion Indian Rupees (more than 45 billion US Dollars).
