About Career
As a Stone Setter, your job will be to insert and fix or set gemstones into pieces of jewellery and similar lifestyle accessories. You will fix or set gemstones in the frame after they are finished through other manufacturing processes.
You will work with various types of gemstones such as diamond, amber, amethyst, pearl, ruby, topaz, emerald, opal, sapphire, etc. You will fix or set these gemstones into varieties of jewellery such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, bangles, rings, etc. made of gold, silver, and other metals or different other materials.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
As a Stone Setter, you will be involved in:-
1. Fixing gemstones into metal mounts or sockets in various pieces of Jewellery.
2. Examining the gemstones before fixing or setting; making sure that the stones do not break during their setting.
3. Ensuring flawless fixing of gemstones as per the design specifications of the jewellery pieces.
4. Ensuring the quality of the finished jewellery pieces after setting or fixing the gemstones.

Career Entry Pathway
Class 10 all subjects as per scheme of studies – Class 11-12 with any subject combination as per scheme of studies – Apply for Certificate in Basic Stone Setting / Certificate in Advanced Stone Setting / Certificate in Pave Stone Setting.

After class 12, you may Certificate in Basic Stone Setting / Certificate in Advanced Stone Setting / Certificate in Pave Stone Setting from any vocational institute or other similar institutes such as Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery, Jaipur; Indian Diamond Institute, etc. These courses are usually 2 months / 3 months in duration.

After completing class 8 or if you have basic literacy skills, then you may obtain NSQF (National Skills Qualification Framework) Level 3 certification in Stone Fixer-Imitation Jewellery from any vocational institute or another similar institute. For this certificate, you need to be 16 years of age.
Required Qualification & Competencies
1. After completing class 12, you can apply for a Certificate in Basic Stone Setting / Certificate in Advanced Stone Setting / Certificate in Pave Stone Setting.
2. However, if you are not inclined to higher education after your class 8 or after obtaining basic literacy skills, you can obtain NSQF Level 3 certification in Stone Fixer-Imitation Jewellery.

4. Finger Dexterity - The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects.
5. Manual Dexterity - The ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
6. Arm-Hand Steadiness - The ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position.

After obtaining an NSQF qualification / Certificate in Basic Stone Setting / Certificate in Advanced Stone Setting / Certificate in Pave Stone Setting, you can find work opportunities as a Stone Setter or Stone Fixer at manufacturing units of various famous Jewellery stores. You can also start your small-scale independent Stone Setting Shop.
Career Growth
As a Stone Setter, you may find limited career opportunities. From a Stone Setter or Stone Fixer, you may grow to a supervisory position in the stone setting department of the Jewellery manufacturing unit. However, you may start your small-scale independent shop of stone settings.
Salary Offered
1. At the beginning of your career, you may expect to get about Rs. 2,000 – 5,000 per month.
2. After 2-4 years of experience, you may expect to get about Rs. 8,000 – 12,000 per month.
3. However, with experience and reputation, after 8-10 years of experience, in a supervisory position in the stone setting department of a jewelry manufacturing unit, you can earn anything between Rs. 15,000 – 22,000 per month.
4. You can get work opportunities in the Middle Eastern countries as well. You can earn a lot more there.
