Description

India is gearing up for the All India Tiger Estimation (AITE) 2026, the world’s largest wildlife monitoring effort, designed to assess not just tiger numbers but also the overall health of the country’s ecosystems. The previous census in 2022 recorded 3,682 tigers, representing nearly three-fourths of the world’s wild tiger population. The 2026 edition aims to expand on this legacy with deeper insights into prey availability, habitat quality, and human-wildlife interaction.

Phase 1: Field Surveys And Ground Data Collection

The first phase involves thousands of forest guards conducting systematic walks, or transects, across protected and forested areas. Over three days, each guard covers around 15 kilometres, recording indirect evidence of tiger presence such as pugmarks, claw scratches, scat, and prey remnants. Simultaneously, they log sightings of herbivores like deer and sambar to estimate prey density. Vegetation studies track the composition and density of trees, shrubs, and grasses, while data on human activities such as cattle grazing or wood collection help gauge habitat stress.

Phase 2: Integrating Ground Data With Satellite Mapping

Once the field information is compiled, scientists at the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, merge it with satellite imagery and GIS data. This phase assesses forest cover, water sources, and terrain features to identify critical tiger habitats and wildlife corridors. Remote sensing and digital analysis reveal areas under environmental stress or encroachment, guiding the next stage of camera deployment with precision.

Phase 3: Camera Trapping And Tiger Identification

The most technologically intensive phase involves installing over 40,000 camera traps across tiger landscapes, each grid spanning about four square kilometres. Cameras are positioned near trails, waterholes, or ridgelines areas identified in earlier phases as high tiger activity zones. Operating for roughly 25 days, these cameras capture images that are later analysed using pattern-recognition software capable of identifying individual tigers by their unique stripe patterns. During the 2022 estimation, this process helped Karnataka alone record 563 tigers.

Significance Of 2026 Estimation

Beyond counting tigers, the upcoming AITE will help determine the success of conservation efforts, identify new conflict zones, and guide future wildlife corridor planning. Karnataka’s five tiger reserves Bandipur, Nagarahole, Bhadra, Kali, and BRT will again play a crucial role, while increasing attention will be given to buffer zones and plantation areas where tiger movement overlaps with human activity.

Blending field tracking, satellite surveillance, and AI-driven analytics, the AITE 2026 is set to reinforce India’s leadership in global wildlife conservation demonstrating how science, technology, and community participation together can safeguard the planet’s most iconic predator.
