Description
The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to two major railway multitracking projects aimed at enhancing train connectivity and boosting freight movement across three Indian states Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. These infrastructure initiatives, with a total investment of ?6,405 crore, will lay down 318 kilometers of additional railway tracks, significantly improving transport efficiency and supporting India’s green mobility goals.
On June 11, 2025, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the projects as part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasizes integrated and sustainable infrastructure development. These projects are set to bolster regional economies, generate large-scale employment, and improve logistics capabilities.
Details Of Approved Projects
Koderma–Barkakana Line Doubling (133 km)
Location: Jharkhand
Strategic Value: Enhances connectivity between Patna and Ranchi via the shortest route and passes through key coal-producing regions.
Ballari–Chikjajur Line Doubling (185 km)
Location: Spanning Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh
Districts Covered: Ballari, Chitradurga (Karnataka), and Anantapur (AP)
Project Benefits
Operational Efficiency & Connectivity
Boosts line capacity, minimizes delays, and enhances reliability for both freight and passenger trains.
Improves access to 1,408 villages, benefiting around 28.19 lakh people.
Environmental Impact
Expected reduction in crude oil import by 52 crore litres.
Estimated cut in carbon emissions by 264 crore kg comparable to planting 11 crore trees.
Promotes eco-friendly freight transport for sectors such as coal, steel, cement, fertilizer, petroleum, and agriculture.
Employment Generation & Economic Boost
The projects will generate 108 lakh man-days of direct employment during the construction phase.
Encourages regional self-reliance and contributes to the broader vision of a self-sufficient India (Atmanirbhar Bharat).
