Description
On May 27, 2025, large amounts of tiny plastic pellets known as nurdles were spotted along the shores of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. This discovery came just two days after the MSC ELSA 3 cargo vessel sank on May 25, 2025. The ship was reportedly carrying containers, some containing hazardous substances. The spread of nurdles along the coast has sparked serious concerns about marine contamination and its potential harm to local ecosystems.
Understanding Nurdles
Nurdles are small plastic granules used as the base material for manufacturing plastic items. According to the International Organisation for Standardisation, they generally range in size from 1 to 5 millimetres. They are usually composed of polymers like polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and PVC. Due to their size and purpose, nurdles are classified as primary microplastics.
Ecological Dangers
These plastic pellets are hazardous to ocean life. Their minuscule size allows them to be swallowed by marine animals, including fish and seabirds, causing digestive blockages and even death. It’s estimated that around 230,000 tonnes of nurdles end up in the oceans each year, threatening biodiversity and endangering coastal communities that rely on fishing and tourism industries.
Past Incidents Of Nurdle Pollution
There have been several high-profile nurdle spill events globally. In 2012, Hong Kong’s coastline was polluted following Typhoon Vicente, which caused a nurdle release. Similarly, in 2017, a spill at South Africa’s Durban Port resulted in 49 tonnes of nurdles leaking into the Indian Ocean. These cases highlighted the environmental risks of transporting plastic pellets via sea routes.
Material Types And Recycling Difficulties
In the Kerala incident, most of the recovered nurdles are composed of Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). These materials are common in packaging and consumer goods. However, LDPE recycling is notably difficult due to its composition and contamination risks, posing challenges to proper waste management and environmental recovery.
Mitigation And Preventive Measures
To combat nurdle pollution, experts propose multiple solutions. While manual beach cleaning can be effective, it demands considerable manpower. Floating barriers and fine-mesh nets are useful at sea to prevent further dispersion. Enhanced packaging methods and tighter shipping container regulations are crucial to reducing the risk of future spills. Regulatory frameworks should also include swift incident reporting requirements.
Ongoing Environmental Threats
The nurdle contamination observed along Kerala’s coast underscores the broader issue of persistent plastic pollution in marine environments. With global plastic production steadily increasing, effective strategies for spill prevention and rapid response are becoming more urgent. This situation is particularly troubling for biodiversity-rich regions like Kerala’s southern coastline, which are vulnerable to long-term ecological damage.
