This initiative aims to establish a reliable framework for certifying green hydrogen, making its production more transparent, traceable, and credible in the energy market.
Green Hydrogen Matters
Green hydrogen is produced using renewable energy and is considered an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fossil fuels. By shifting to green hydrogen, India can significantly cut down on greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security by minimizing reliance on imported fuels.
Objectives Of GHCI
Develop a formal and standardized certification system for green hydrogen in India
Improve transparency and traceability in the production process
Build credibility and foster trust among investors and stakeholders
Ensure consistent production standards and quality control
Salient Features Of Scheme
Mandatory Certification - All domestic green hydrogen producers, excluding those producing solely for export, must obtain certification.
Renewable Energy Compliance - Certified hydrogen must be generated entirely using renewable energy sources.
Authorized Agencies - The certification will be handled by Accredited Carbon Verification (ACV) Agencies, recognized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
Carbon Market Integration - From 2026, once India’s carbon market becomes operational, green hydrogen certificates will be tradable assets within this market structure.
Empowering MSMEs In Hydrogen Economy
Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are expected to play a crucial role in advancing India's green hydrogen ecosystem. With their capacity for innovation and regional outreach, MSMEs can contribute significantly to manufacturing components, offering services, and producing hydrogen from biomass. Their active participation will also support job creation and economic development.
National Green Hydrogen Mission: Vision for 2030
Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, India aims to achieve an annual green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) by 2030. This target will require approximately 125 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity. The mission also anticipates attracting investments worth over rupees 8 lakh crore, generating more than six lakh jobs, and reducing both fossil fuel imports and carbon emissions substantially.
