Description

In a crucial step forward for global health preparedness, the Serum Institute of India (SII) has joined the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) network of vaccine makers in the Global South. This joint initiative intends to improve future public health disease outbreak responses by making them more quick, agile, and egalitarian.

CEPI's Mission And Investments

CEPI, a global collaboration dedicated to epidemic prevention, will contribute up to $30 million to increase SII's manufacturing capacity. The goal is to enable the rapid development and provision of investigational vaccinations in response to epidemic and pandemic risks. This strategic investment will enable CEPI-backed vaccine developers to transfer their technology to SII within days or weeks of an outbreak, allowing for faster manufacturing and equitable distribution of inexpensive vaccines to affected people.

CEPI's 100 Day Mission

CEPI and SII's relationship corresponds with the ambitious 100 Days Mission, which has been supported by the G7, G20, and industry leaders. The mission's goal is to create new vaccines against known or novel infectious illnesses within three months of a pandemic danger being identified. SII's integration with CEPI's production network is expected to play a critical role in attaining this goal.

Support For Priority Pathogens

With CEPI funding, SII will not only strengthen its production capabilities, but will also actively support the research, stockpiling, and licensure of new vaccines against CEPI's priority infections. The collaboration entails identifying specific CEPI-backed vaccinations that SII would prioritize, so improving collective readiness for potential disease outbreaks.

CEPI’s Global Manufacturing Network

SII is the fourth member of CEPI's worldwide manufacturing network, joining Aspen in South Africa, Institut Pasteur de Dakar in Senegal, and Bio Farma in Indonesia. CEPI established this network to increase the worldwide footprint of vaccine production, with a concentration on vaccine producers in the worldwide South. The geographical emphasis is on places at high risk of outbreaks caused by fatal viral threats such as Lassa Fever, Nipah, Disease X, and other viruses with epidemic or pandemic potential, which CEPI prioritizes.

Dr. Richard Hatchett's Perspective

Dr. Richard Hatchett, CEO of CEPI, emphasized the need for heightened preparedness in the face of escalating epidemic and pandemic risks. He stated, “Living in an era of heightened epidemic and pandemic risk, evidenced by the increasing prevalence, speed, and spread of outbreaks of infectious disease, we must prepare to confront these threats head-on to avoid another Covid-like catastrophe in the future.”

A Key Strategy For Future Pandemic Prevention

In the event of an outbreak, SII may be relied upon to provide innovative vaccines for preclinical and clinical testing, as well as large-scale production. Shortening the time it takes to create and validate the first batches of experimental vaccines is thought to be critical in enabling a response in less than 100 days, a goal that might help stop a future pandemic in its tracks.
