Description
The Central Asian Flyway (CAF) is a major migration route that spans Eurasia's huge continental area, passing through 30 nations in North, Central, and South Asia. This flyway contains numerous important waterbird migration routes, the majority of which travel from breeding grounds in the Russian Federation's northern areas to non-breeding or wintering sites in West and South Asia, the Maldives, and the British Indian Ocean Territory.
CAF Migration Pathway
CAF migration routes include the steppes and freezing deserts of central Eurasia, as well as part of the Himalayan range, which hosts rare high-altitude migrations like the Bar-headed Goose. There are at least 279 populations of 182 migratory duck species in the flyway, 29 of which are globally vulnerable or near threatened. Many waterfowl populations are quickly dropping, and their habitats are under threat as a result of unrestricted hunting, habitat degradation, unsustainable water management, and a lack of law enforcement and conservation capacity.
CAF And AEWA Agreement Zone
The CAF is linked to the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), which was signed in 1995 in The Hague, Netherlands. The AEWA Agreement Area includes 16 of the 30 nations participating in the CAF, accounting for more than half of the population of migratory waterfowl species.
Conservation Initiative
In May 2023, the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change will organise a summit of range countries in New Delhi in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme/Convention on Migratory Species (UNEP/CMS). The meeting's major goal was to improve conservation efforts for migrating birds and their habitats along the Central Asian Flyway.
