The Agnipath recruitment system, under which young people can enlist in the army for three years, is nearing completion at the centre. According to media sources. Agnipath is the new moniker for the Indian Army's 'Tour of Duty' concept. For the youth, the Agnipath (service in the combat forces) initiative envisions the induction of 100 officers and 1000 other young recruits for a three-year period.

According to reports, the plan intends to give young people an opportunity to serve their country. Agniveers will be the name given to the new recruits (Military tourists).

Agnipath Scheme's Goal

The Agnipath initiative would give those young people who want to serve their country but are unable to do so owing to present service requirements a chance to do so. Currently, the scheme allows young people to enlist in the Indian Army for three years. Later on, it could be extended to the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. The proposal has yet to receive formal approval, although discussions are said to be nearing completion.

Benefits of the Agnipath Scheme

The initiative will supply more young men to the Indian Army to man the borders, addressing the problem of a soldier shortage. Because there would be no pension system, the scheme will not have a long-term financial burden. It would also prepare the youth to become well-disciplined patriots, when they return to civilian life, will raise the standard for discipline and effort in society.

What are the scheme's disadvantages?

Before being authorised to enlist in the training academies, candidates must pass fitness tests and other exams as part of their regular terms of duty in the Indian Defence Forces. Before being assigned to the field, the recruits must complete at least a year of training. The Agnipath system, on the other hand, will not require youth to take an admission exam. Recruits enlisting under the plan may be required to undergo additional training in order to be ready for field deployment, which might last up to two years for three-year tenure. Another big concern is the Agniveers' performance review and how their work will be appraised in comparison to the normal cadre.
