A bench led by Chief Justice N V Ramana took note of senior attorney Sanjay Hegde's representations on behalf of several students that an urgent hearing was required given the forthcoming exams. The Supreme Court decided on Wednesday to hear the petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court ruling that dismissed the petitions seeking permission to wear hijab inside the classroom, stating it is not a part of the core religious practise in Islamic faith, after the Holi break.
The senior counsel informed the bench, which also included Justices A S Bopanna and Hima Kohli, that the urgency stems from the large number of females who must sit in examinations. Others have also stated, "Let's see...we'll list after the vacations." Allow us some time, the CJI remarked.
Some applications have been made against the full bench high court ruling in the case, which concluded that wearing a headscarf is not an important religious practise in the Islamic religion under Article 25 of the constitution. The petitions submitted by a group of Muslim girls at the Government Pre-University Girls College in Udupi requesting permission to wear Hijab within the school were dismissed by the high court.
